Windows 2003 & 2008 Standard Licensing?
Some people naturally assume that as their pc runs windows, so should their server. However the OS you pick should reflect what you intend to use the server for; more specifically ASP, FrontPage, the .NET environment, Windows Streaming Media, Access, MSSQL, or any other Microsoft proprietary technologies.

Ubuntu, Debain, Fedora, CentOS
Linux operating systems are best option for the more experienced user as many tasks are run via the command line; however user interfaces and or control panels such as cPanel or Plesk are available to help manage your server. Linux is usually the first choice as many shared hosting platforms use a form of Linux.
